June Yard of the Month – Gary and Sharyn Pitt
104 Duck Creek Lane (N54)
This is a yard that pops with color and interest even during early spring, where
the liberal use of snapdragons and pansies anchor emerging flower beds. Alys-
sum adds delightful olfactory appeal with whiffs of perfume scenting the yard.
The homeowners designed the contractor-built hardscapes, but they do all the
planting. After some initial trial and error, they discovered that Green Mound
juniper, abelia, angelonia, Mexican heather and vinca withstand the harsh west-
ern summer sun. A very pleasing use of color is achieved with the use of dark
mulch contrasting areas of rock. This complements the thoughtful choice of
plants. Efficient water conservation is accomplished by placing plants close to
appropriate irrigation sites. Both passersby and the odd rabbit have found this
yard a delight. It’s easy to understand why!
