n18 BOOK DISCUSSION GROUP
MEETS AUTHOR
Members of the N18 Book Discussion
Group were in for a big surprise last
month when hostess Jane Wirth planned
a visit from Alison Moore (second from
left), author of the book “Riders on the
Orphan Train” which was the selected
reading of the month.
Members of the book group went on an
imaginary train trip at the book club dis-
cussion last month, as orphans from New
York City. They learned that over 250,000
children were sent aboard these trains
from 1874 to 1925 to all forty-eight states,
many coming to Texas. Some orphans,
now near 100 years of age, are still living
here in our state.
The book discussion group was treated
to retro-treats from the early 1900s and
a yummy cake resembling a steam loco-
motive and a passenger car with children
peering out.
