June Meeting
Before you squish or spray the bugs and
caterpillars feasting in your yard, make
sure it is the right thing to do. Wayne Rho-
den, president of the Williamson County
Master Gardeners, will present the June
program, “Good Bug/Bad Bug.”Wayne is a
Texas Master Gardener Entomology Spe-
cialist. He will include lots of photographs
and gardening tips in his presentation.
The June agenda items will also feature
“Plant of the Month” and “Tips of the
Month” presentations. During the social
part of our meeting, an ongoing slideshow
will feature the Yard of the Month hon-
orees and other surprise photos. Master
Gardeners will be available to answer
your gardening questions. There will be
a table for sharing plants, seeds and gar-
den items. You can check out a book from
the portable gardening library and you
might even win a door prize at the end
of the meeting.
It’s not too late to join the Garden Club!
Dues are $12 and can be paid online or at
the meeting. Visitors are always welcome.

Join us on the trail! The Hiking Club will
sponsor more than 89 group hikes this
year, as well as four social events. Hike
destinations include not only nearby sce-
nic areas, such as the San Gabriel River
Trail and Lake Georgetown’s Goodwater
Loop, but also more far-flung locations,
such as Enchanted Rock State Natural
Area and Colorado Bend State Park.
Participants can choose their individual
level of hike difficulty, with trails vary-
ing from three to twelve miles in length.
Potential members are welcome to take
part in an introductory hike. Instructions
for applying for membership are accessed
by clicking on Contact Us > Application
Form. Our extensive website also contains
helpful guidelines on hike procedures and
equipment. Activities during June include
hikes along greenbelts within Austin and
Round Rock, farther-flung outings to the
Pedernales River and Lake Travis areas
and also local hikes on the Goodwater
Loop at Lake Georgetown or along our
hometown Sun City Texas trails. Obtain
details on this month’s scheduled hikes
and special events by logging on to the
Sun City Texas website; after accessing
the Hiking Club site, click on a specific
date on our Calendar.

Horseshoe Courts
Contact: Tom Minor, 512-863-9811
Some members of our club competed in
the Brazos Valley Games held in College
Station and they all won medals! Win-
ners are Gonzalo Garza, Curtis Rehfuss,
Larry Amundson, Sam Gott, Roger
Dennen, and Curtis Burson. See photos
in the Around Sun City section.
The HAWKS are now under the leader-
ship of President Sam Gott. With our
main emphasis on having fun, making
new friends, and enjoying fellowship, we
invite both men and women to come and
see what nice facilities are available to
play horseshoes. Even if you have never
played, the game is easy to learn. We
even have tools for picking up the shoes,
so only a minimum amount of bending
is required.
Shuffleboard SIG
Sun City Texas has an active Shuffle-
board group; approximately 20 indi-
viduals belong to the Shuffleboard SIG
and 20 other residents also play at the
two courts (adjacent to Bocce Courts,
and next to Horseshoes and Washers).
The courts are open every day to resi-
dents. Although there is no league play,
members of the SIG and other residents
gather at the courts at
9 a.m.
every Tues-
day and Thursday to play for one hour.
Shuffleboard is fun for individuals of
all ages and all physical abilities. It is
easy to learn and easy to play―an ideal
outdoor activity to enjoy with friends and
neighbors. Newcomers are welcome to
join us any time. If you have not played
in the past and would like to be intro-
duced to the game at a time other than
9 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, email
Tom Rice at

Our speaker for the monthly member-

velopment Director at the Annunciation
Maternity Home on Shell Road. She will
talk about their programs at the home,
and how they utilize the produce donated
by our Community Outreach SIG. The
women are taught how to prepare and
cook various vegetables in order to prepare
healthy meals for themselves and their
family. Annunciation also has plans to
build a raised garden of their own in the
near future.
For each of the last four years, the Commu-
nity Outreach SIG has donated over one
ton of organic produce to Annunciation and
The Caring Place Food Bank. This group
started in 2006, using beds donated for a
season at a time, but now has the use of
