Wildflowers, roses, historical homes
and timeless antiques – it’s springtime in Br-
enham. Tour the 1870Greek Revival Giddings
Stone Mansion and the 1898 Carol Bennett
Victorian. Well-versed docents will guide us
through these two spectacular homes, each furnished in period
antiques.
Next stop is downtown Brenham, an eclectic array of historical
buildings, specialty shops, and dining options, all built around
the courthouse square. The BrenhamVisitor Center has provided
us withmaps of downtownwith suggestions for lunch, shopping,
and history.
After lunch, we head out to the historical town of Independence.
Sam Houston lived here, and Baylor built their first University
here. However, it’s a different piece of Texas history we will be
portant to them to build a place to worship. The result was these
beautiful buildings which are still used by local parishioners
today.
On this trip we will visit three Catholic churches not seen on
most of the Painted Churches tours since these are all in Lavaca
County. We will start at The Ascension of Our Lord Church in
Moravia where we will meet our step-on guide. Thenwe will see
St. Mary’s Church, outside of Hallettsville. Following our first
two church visits, we will travel to Shiner for a delicious buffet
lunch at Werner’s Restaurant. Lunch will include three meat
choices, numerous sides, drink, and dessert.
After lunch we will go to the Spoetzl Brewery, founded in 1909,
for a guided tour watching the process of making Shiner Beer,
along with free samples and a gift shop visit. Our final church
will be Saints Cyril &Methodius Church in Shiner, built in 1922
in the Romanesque Revival style.
Remember to bring your camera. All of these churches’ decora-
tions and architecture are something you will wish to view over
and over.
