Before Ursi Metzger began exercising with a personal trainer just over a year
ago, she found simple tasks such as standing up to put on her winter jacket to
be nearly impossible. Multiple sclerosis, she says, had sapped her strength and
compromised her balance. “Exercise has changed my daily life one-hundred-
and-ten percent,” says Ursi, 53. “Things that were impossible or extremely
difficult for me to accomplish, I can now do with ease.”
Ursi works out three times each week with personal trainer Don Moore at
Cowan Creek Fitness Center. “After my workout, I’m glad it’s over with. I’m
naturally worn out and need to rest,” she says. “But Donmotivates me beyond
my expectations, and always gives me helpful words of encouragement.”
The admiration is mutual. According to Don, Ursi has refused to be a victim
of MS. “Each exercise session leaves her very tired because she is working
against MS, but she has a cheerful determination to do what I ask her do to,”
he says. “I push her because she -- and everyone else -- can only build strength
by increasing the demand. The human body conforms to the demands that we
put on it, whether it’s the health benefits of consistent exercise or the health
damage from consistent sitting. Ursi has a great attitude and works hard to
rebuild strength and newneural pathways through strength training. Not only
has she gotten stronger in her upper body, but she is building strength in her
legs as well. More strength leads to better balance in her walking and also as
she sits down and stands up.”
A native of Switzerland, Ursi stays in touch with family and friends via Skype
and email. Her greatest support system here, she says, is her husband Bob,
who accompanies her to every personal training session. “Phenomenal” is the
way they describe the Sun City Texas Fitness facilities, equipment, and staff.
“Strength training isn’t about bulking up,” says Don. “It’s about doing what’s
necessary tomaintain your ability tomovewith confidence. Scheduling sessions
with a certified personal trainer not only helps you overcome the bad habits
that you’ve learned over the years, but it’s a great way to motivate yourself to
get into a consistent routine and to exercise safely and effectively.
