The 2013 deer census in Sun City Tex-
as was conducted on three consecutive
nights, September 16, 17 and 18. The total
average count for the three nights was 471
deer. The table shows each night’s count
and the average for all three nights. Based
on the 2013 deer census, the Texas Parks
&Wildlife Department recommended the
removal of 150 deer from CA-controlled
property in Sun City. The Wildlife Man-
agement Committee has endorsed the
TPWD recommendation, which was then
approved by the CA Board of Directors.
DEER TRAPPING
The deer trapping program will start
around the middle of December with the
clearing of trap locations and setting up
of feeders. Trapping will start right after
January 1, 2014, for this season. This
program will continue until the recom-
mended numbers of deer are removed or
March 31, whichever comes first.
Simply put, our deer management pro-
gram strives to remove a Texas Parks and
Wildlife-recommended number of deer
from a situation where too many deer are
trying to live in too small a habitat. This
management practice ensures that our
deer will thrive in the existing habitat.
Once again, the Wildlife Management
Committee would like to thank all the
volunteers who participated in this year’s
deer census.
