Georgetown Police Department’s
Silver Shields Program
It isn’t new, but it is enhanced, and its name
has changed. Formerly known as Silver Bells,
the Silver Shields program provides services to
qualifying seniors throughout Georgetown. The
decision to change the name of the program al-
lowed us to move away froma Christmas-focused
program and provide a more extensive list of services year-round.
The program’s mission is to
“Build a positive connection between
homebound and/or special needs seniors and the Georgetown Police
Department to help ensure a feeling of safety, security, and inclusion
in the community.”
To help accomplish our mission, we have partnered with the George-
town Fire Department, and our new logo represents our united
commitment to meet the needs of the seniors we serve. We have
also established partnerships with Faith in Action Caregivers, an
organization providing personal transportation services to home-
bound seniors, and Kopcakes, a unique cupcake company owned
by one of our retired police officers. Plans are underway to estab-
lish alliances with The Caring Place, Meals on Wheels and other
organizations providing services to seniors, in an effort to identify
as many people as possible who may be interested in our services.
To qualify for Silver Shields services, applicants must be ages 65
or over, homebound, or have other special needs. Applicants and/or
caregivers are interviewed by one of our Citizen Police volunteers
or a member of our Silver Shields program steering committee,
prior to being accepted. We will provide referral services to other
agencies when we can’t meet the needs of one of our clients.
Silver Shields offers the following services:
• Senior Safety & Community Information classes
• Home safety checks
• Personal safety and wellness calls (RUOK)
• Emergency & Safety materials and literature
• News and Tips Bulletins
• A Happy Birthday Club (Note: Recently, we held a birthday
card design contest with children from Mrs. Mac’s Shining
Stars and selected three designs that will be used throughout
2014 as part of our Happy Birthday Club. These cards and a
special selection fromKopcakes will be delivered to our seniors
as part of our monthly birthday recognition event.)
• Special Holiday services and events
Over the next few months, you will see more public information
about Silver Shields and our RUOK program. If you are qualified
to receive our services or know someone who may qualify, please
contact us at 512-930-2747 or via email at
.
