‘It’s a Wonderful Life’
As I write this article, the budget and planning process for
2014 is underway and going well―by the time you read this,
we will all know the final outcome. In this interim period,
allow me a moment of reflection, not on issues or challenges,
but on life in Sun City Texas.
Never in my life would I have guessed that I would live in
an “active adult” community, but how lucky we are that we
found Sun City Texas! Our “dues” are less per month than a
membership to a gym, a good massage, a perm and pedicure,
a night’s stay at almost any motel, or a dinner for two at a
good restaurant! Yet, for this amount, we live in an absolutely
beautiful community with a myriad of amenities, clubs and
activities to rival ANY community.
But what really sets Sun City Texas apart are the people. For
the most part, we are a happy lot. We have worked hard to
get here and have a united desire to enjoy what we have left―
and what wonderfully diverse backgrounds we have! I know a
baker, probably a candlestick maker from the Woodshop, and
I butcher my golf score. Seriously though, we have teachers,
school photographers, retired military, government officials,
farmers (ranchers, here in Texas), those with business back-
grounds of all kinds, and many more―from all over the country!
For the most part, all of us need to watch our finances, but,
due to the nature of our community, we get to
do
so much! We
are able to take advantage of the endless opportunities and
activities right here in Sun City Texas. We dance, golf, play
racquet sports, swim, run, play cards and various games, take
bus trips, build, knit, paint, and grow things.
We are also an unusually giving community. Certainly we pay
our taxes and use many of the local and state facilities, albeit
much less than many of our neighbors, but we give―and we
give of ourselves. Here in Sun City Texas, we serve on gover-
nance and advisory committees, participate in Adopt-a-Hole,
support Salute the Troops, and work for our community to be
Firewise. Nevertheless, every day hundreds of us leave the
reservation to help our greater community. You can’t go to a
local hospital and not see us volunteering; we volunteer at
the Georgetown Public Library, the Police Department, for
the city government―from Mayor to City Council and vari-
ous advisory committees/commissions. We ring the bell for
the Salvation Army, we help at The Caring Place, we deliver
Meals on Wheels, participate significantly in Rotary, Kiwanis
and Shriners. We are Mentors in both Georgetown and Jarrell
