Thursday and Saturday mornings from
9-11 a.m. The club also welcomes any
landscape plant or equipment donations;
bring them by the Gardens on Thursdays
and Saturdays between 9-11 a.m. Money
raised from the plant sales and the club’s
participation in the Sun City Garage Sales
fund all Horticulture Club activities and
projects.
The Horticulture Club is planning an
Open House on Saturday, February 22,
2014, at the community garden. The Open
House is open to all Sun City Texas resi-
dents and will offer tours of the garden,
highlighting the recent addition of the
automated greenhouse. Members will be
available to answer questions about the
club, and how to rent one of the 265 raised
garden beds. A rain date is scheduled for
Sunday, February 23, 2014. Stay tuned
to future
Sun Rays
for more information.

M
embers of the Horticulture Club
have been using their green
thumbs for more than 10 years
here in Sun City Texas. The club actu-
ally began as a Special Interest Group of
the Garden Club in 2002, but grew to a
chartered club the following year. Since
then, the club has grown to almost 400
members who maintain a community
garden that spans more than six acres.
The Sun City Gardens feature a vineyard,
a nursery, an herb garden, an orchard, as
well as 265 raised garden beds available
for rent―not to mention a fully-automated
24-foot-by-36-foot greenhouse, which was
completed earlier this year. The garden,
located at 141 Sun City Blvd. right next
to the Del Webb Softball Field and the
Sun City Texas Dog Park, is a licensed
retail nursery in the State of Texas with
access to several local wholesale nurseries.
The club maintains most of the beds and
other planting through equipment dona-
tions of members, as well as monetary do-
nations and fundraising sales. Each year,
the club hosts two special plant sales―one
in the spring and one in the fall; how-
ever, members also sell organic compost,
mulch and select plants year-round every
