Zzzzzzzzzumba is definitely a workout
for movers and shakers. Don’t let the
z’s fool you - no one will fall asleep in
this musical, full-body exercise class.
(Notice howmusic is a theme inmany
of the classes – music that makes you
move.)
Zumba originated in the mid ’90s,
when aerobics instructor Beto
Perez forgot the music for a class
he was teaching. Improvising with
music he had found in his car and
nontraditional aerobics, he created an
ad hoc dance workout that now has
over 14 million people moving and
grooving each week.
On the day I attended Taryn
Stafford’s Zumba class, she began
by singing a song from Man of La
Mancha - a delightful treat, inspiring
and beautiful. Ms. Stafford is a voice
major, and she has a major voice,
which came in handy as she gave
instructions while we danced to the
music she played.
Zumba Toning (as it’s called by Sun
City Fitness) looks accessible to
everyone, and I noted individuals
with all levels of fitness taking part.
It takes place at 2 p.m. on Thursdays
at the Texas Drive Fitness Center.
There is definitely room for more
participants, and though I saw no
men taking part (at least in the
particular session I attended), I
suspect that many of you guys would
enjoy it, especially the social aspect.
In addition to a great cardio workout,
proponents of Zumba say it’s safe for
all ages, builds strength, improves
range of motion, helps with posture
and allows participants to mix and
mingle. Try a class – even if you don’t
mingle, you’ll be sure to merengue.
