JANUARY YARD OF THE MONTH
Mary Beth and Craig Applefield • 205 Goose Island Drive (N43)
As we sit all snug and toasty in sweaters and wool socks, it’s rather easy to for-
get how taxing and sweltering the seemingly endless days of 90-plus degrees
can be. With a westward facing back yard that slopes away from the house,
creating sufficient shade to deliver respite from the oppressive summer heat
was one of the first jobs Craig and Mary Beth tackled in their new landscape on
Goose Island. And rather than start with building cover, they chose to plant it.
What began six years ago as a small stand of “spindly” Texas live oaks planted
center point between the sun and their enchanting rear patio has since grown
up enough to provide a wide canvas of leafy green that delivers blissful shade.
While waiting for nature to catch up, the Applefields spent many an evening on
their east facing patio located to the left of their front door, encircled by a de-
lightful collection of plant friends including Boston ferns, lantana, Japanese yew,
crape myrtles, coleus and roses. Mary Beth says when they spend an evening on
their front yard patio, friends and neighbors tend to stop by more often, giving
them a chance to share stories and a glass of wine. Bellissimo! ~
