Protect Your Home from Burglary
Following the invasion of their personal space, burglary victims
often are left feeling vulnerable and violated. While residential
burglaries may seem random in nature, usually there is a simple
selection process – understanding this process can help to ensure
your home is a secure space.
Statistically, residential burglaries occur during the day, while
families are at work or at school. Of these unoccupied homes, those
with easy or concealed access and quick escape routes are most likely
to be targeted. The most common entry technique is a hard kick
to the door, which forces the wooden jamb to give way. Household
tools like hammers, screwdrivers, pry bars and pliers also may be
used to gain entry into your home.
WAYS TO PROTECT YOUR HOME
Bright Ideas
• Install lights by all exterior doors.
• Install outside light fixtures where bulbs are hard to reach.
• Illuminate house numbers for quick emergency response.
• Trim shrubs back from doors and windows so burglars don’t
have a place to hide.
Doors & Windows
• Hide your garage door opener from open view.
• Always lock your doors and windows.
• Give your neighbor the spare key – don’t hide it outside.
• Use solid core or metal exterior doors.
• Add auxiliary track-type locks, removable drop bars, wooden
dowels or pinning devices to windows and sliding glass doors.
• Install peepholes, with 160° views, on doors
Street Smarts
•Close the garage door and cover windows so no one can see inside.
• Leave only the ignition key with parking lot attendants and
only if required.
Personal Information
• Keep valuables in a safe deposit box.
• Use a locking mailbox.
Dealing with Strangers
• Never let strangers enter your home.
• Verify workers by ID cards and calling their employer.
• Never give keys to workers.
• Never leave notes on the door for anyone.
While on Vacation
• Install a UL approved and monitored residential alarm system.
• Use timers on indoor lights to give the impression you are home.
Don’t be afraid to call 911.
