VOLUNTEERS IN POLICE SERVICE
Have you ever wondered how your police de-
partment works? It is not always like
COPS
,
48 Hours
,
Law & Order
, or
CSI
, but there are
opportunities for you to learn how things oper-
ate by volunteering with the Georgetown Po-
lice Department’s Volunteers in Police Service
(VIPS) program.
The VIPS program is comprised of community volunteers working
to supplement the capacity of our police department and support
special community programs. Volunteers serve by performing a
variety of internal tasks, such as front desk reception, records
data entry and scanning, administrative assistance, social media
material design and development, analyzing traffic accident data
for statistical purposes, and graffiti abatement.
Other volunteers work with our Animal Services unit helping
with adoptions, dog-walking, or general office work; or the Victim
Services unit assisting victims and officers at a crime scene or
domestic dispute; or our Park Ranger program, managed by our
Community Resource unit, which assists our officers by patrol-
ling park trails to help ensure the safety and security of citizens
using our parks.
The department also works with volunteer members of the George-
town Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (CPAAA), a
501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting major police department programs
like Blue Santa, Take Me Home, Silver Shield, Explorers, and
Honor Guard through fundraising activities and special events.
The perfect way to get started as a volunteer is to attend one of
the Citizen Police Academy (CPA) classes. This 12-week class
is offered twice a year and offers citizens a glimpse inside the
department through a series of presentations by police and court
personnel. All VIPS volunteers are required to take this course
either prior to volunteering or during the first year of volunteer
service. Graduates of the CPA are eligible to join the CPAAA to
work on the programs it supports or join our volunteer team as a
member of any other volunteer unit.
“We hope that anyone in Georgetown who wants to learn more
and contribute to the important work of the police department
will consider taking one of the CPA classes and volunteering,” said
Linda Lipscomb, the coordinator for the VIPS program. “We are
always looking for people with a wide range of interests and skills
who have the time to serve a few hours each month.”
If you have questions or would like more details about the volun-
teer program, call the Georgetown Police Department Volunteer
Center at 512-930-8457, or email our VIPS Program Coordinator,
