Walgreens will provide Trivalent Standard
and High Dose Flu vaccines and Pneumovax
and Prevnar-13 vaccines at the Sun City Flu
and Pneumonia Clinic on Friday, Sept. 30 from
9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Overall, the 2015-2016 influenza season was less severe than
the previous three seasons.
The CDC lists the following recommendations for the 2016-
2017 flu season:
– All people 6 months and
older need annual flu
vaccine protection.
– The vaccine is most
effective if given in
September or October
before the start of the
flu season.
– It takes two weeks
after vaccination for
antibodies to develop
and provide protection from the flu. If you are in contact
with someone who has the flu at this time you may become
ill with the flu.
– If you develop flu symptoms (with or without the vaccine)
contact your health care provider as soon as possible.
Antiviral medication for treatment of the flu is most effective
if given within 48 hours. It is a prescription medication.
– There is a higher risk of flu complications for adults over
age 65 that may require hospitalization.
– To prevent risk of the flu, stay away from sick people; wash
your hands with soap and water to reduce germs; and stay
home if you are sick!
Pneumonia related to influenza was slightly above the epidemic
threshold in 2015-2016. Pneumonia is the most serious
complication of the flu and can be fatal.
The CDC recommends all adults over age 65 receive both of the
two available pneumococcal vaccines: the Pneumovax vaccine
and the “new” Prevnar-13 vaccine. Each of these vaccines are
one-time-only vaccines.
If you are not sure which vaccines to take or have any questions
about the flu or pneumonia vaccines, check with your physician.
