W
hen I asked President Art
Schmitt what he likes best
about the RV Club, he smiled.
“Adventure, camaraderie, friendships and
fun. RVing is a lifestyle,” said Art. “When
you travel, eat, explore, and sit around a
campfire together, you become friends.”
Art and his wife, Beth, have RV’d for
over 20 years, and joined the RV Club
immediately after moving to Sun City
Texas in 2004. There they met other long-
time RV enthusiasts, such as John and
Barbara Wood, who had joined the club
one year after its founding in 1997. As
tennis umpires, the Woods had lived in
their class B van while traveling to college
and professional matches. They now have
a motor home, and still love travelling
with the club.
Not all members of the RV Club are as
thoroughly experienced – many members
only purchased their first RV after moving
to Sun City. “We all help each other,” says
Art. Volunteer “WagonMasters” organize
trips, and members may travel indepen-
dently or teamupwith others. All RV’s are
welcome, including van conversions, travel
trailers, 5th wheels, and every variety
of motor home. The club boasts over 100
‘rigs’ and 192 members, including couples
and singles.
As you might guess, members of the Sun
City RV Club have traveled extensively.
They’ve traveled coast to coast, fromVan-
couver Island to Newfoundland. They’ve
seen Big Bend, Ft. Davis, and the Gulf
Coast. InMay, members enjoyed a trip to
Louisiana for the Breaux Bridge Crawfish
Festival. Because many new members
are also new to Texas, the club often
plans shorter, regional adventures, such
as Mardi Gras, which is scheduled for
February 2015.
Last year, while visiting a campground in
Santa Fe, Art and Beth thought the RV
Club would enjoy a trip to NewMexico as
well. Upon their return to Sun City, the
Schmitts volunteered as WagonMasters,
and in October led a convoy of 15 rigs to
the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. (Be
sure to watch for future
Sun Rays
editions
as members Ken and Mary Lou Stubert
will take photos and recount their adven-
tures.)
The RVClub website is loaded with useful
club information for RVers - I even found
easy recipes, including those from the chili
cook-off of 2013. True to the adventure-
driven RVmindset, the clubmeets in vari-
ous locations, and have previously gath-
ered in venues such as Dale’s Essenhaus
in Walburg, Mel’s Bowling Alley, B J’s,
Berry Creek, our own Sun City facilities,
and other fun destinations. The clubmeets
monthly during fall, winter and spring;
however, they do not meet during summer
as (you guessed it!) so many members are
out adventuring.
