Antiques
Roadshow,
Here we
Come!
When the popular PBS television show
Antiques Road-
show
came to Austin in June of 2014, several Sun City
residents took their treasures to the filming location,
hoping to have their collections appraised or, even
better, be chosen to appear on the show. The Cowards
and the Wakefields had items of interest to the show
and were chosen to appear on an upcoming episode
to be broadcast in January or February!
GLENN AND DEANNE COWARD
In 1975, when Deanne Coward purchased a 1933 Wurlitzer
jukebox at an auction in Mead, Kansas, she never dreamed
it would end up on television one day. Deanne bought the
jukebox for her husband, Glenn, as a Father’s Day gift for
$75. Nearly 40 years later, Glenn’s jukebox was selected to
be one of the featured items on
Antiques Roadshow
. Glenn
and Deanne were pleased with the value assigned to their
jukebox by the show’s appraiser.
The Wurlitzer still plays old 78 RPM records with tunes
from the 30s and 40s with a few songs by 50s recording
artist Bill Haley thrown into the mix – just insert a few
nickels and dimes.
Bob and Marilyn Wakefield
“It is a Japanese ginger jar.” That’s what Sun City Texas
resident Marilyn Wakefield took to last June’s appearance
in Austin of
Antiques Roadshow
. Now slated to have her
moment on the stage, she recalls the jar’s background. “My
parents bought it shortly before World War II at an estate
sale in Pasadena, California. I was only 10 and have no
idea what they paid for it.” What did an expert appraiser
tell her that it could bring at a modern auction? Watch the
show to find out.
