WGA 9-Hole Group
Submitted by Kempa Rider, WGA 9-Hole Publicity
Rains during the month of October did interfere with some playdays, but those wa-
ter droplets were a welcomed sight! We are one busy and involved group! Our Club
Championship, WGA-9/WGA-18 Fun Fest, and Ring on a String took place within
a seven-day time period! Our tournament director, Susan Dimaline, did a fabulous
job keeping her head above water and getting everything organized to ensure smooth
running. Hats off to her for everything she does for the group! I feel certain the 2014
calendar planners will be sure not to schedule so many events that close together
again. Regardless, a fun time was had by the golfers, although the social committee
and the tournament chair were chasing their tails!
In addition to the previously listed events, players from Sun City Texas and sur-
rounding golf clubs participated in the Berry Bowl held at Berry Creek Country
Club. Rally for the Cure was another major tournament held in October. While not
classified as a WGA-9 sponsored event, it is a huge happening in Sun City Texas.
Money collected from the Ring on a String event was donated to Rally for the Cure.
Additionally, many of our members volunteered to make cookies, package prizes,
sell raffle tickets and perform other tasks.
Officers for 2014 were elected on November 12. Those who will serve in a leadership
position are: President, Betty Ann Preston; Vice-President, Kempa Rider; Tourna-
ment Chair, Susan Dimaline; Treasurer, Paula Elmers; Secretary, Jan Bradley;
Golf Committee Representative, Jan Dobbs.
In December, we will be able to purchase Mulligans for Charity. Any money col-
lected for this occasion will be donated to Backpack Kids. Our year will conclude on
December 10 at our catered Holiday Luncheon and installation of officers.

Notes from the Golf Committee
leadership, which has led to improved
conditions on all of our golf courses.
Although the Adopt-a-Hole program
had been started earlier, it seemed to
stall, as it needed an energetic leader
to get people excited about keeping our
fairways and greens in top condition.
Betty Ann drafted Mike Pender, who
has established this program on a solid
base and involved hundreds of residents.
An Advocate for Growth
Betty Ann also put forth the idea that
we needed a program to welcome new
residents who wanted to get involved
in playing golf at Sun City Texas, both
established golfers and those who had
always wanted to learn. That idea be-
came the Golf Ambassador program to
welcome new arrivals and coordinate
neighborhood golf activities.
Betty Ann also championed such pro-
grams as Nine & Dine, Tee for Two,
Neighborhood Cup, Golf 101, and Bo-
nus 9s―all programs designed to get
residents interested in and enjoying the
game of golf.
So that all residents would be better
informed, she formed a Communications
Committee to submit “Notes from the
Golf Committee” to
Sun Rays
and to
manage the golf microsite on the Sun
City Texas website. With encourage-
ment from this subcommitte, she pushed
to separate out the golf news from the
CA Communicator and thus was formed
the Golf Communicator. All of this has
led to the golf community knowing what
was going on with the Committee and
with all of the golf activities. The rumor
mill is not quite so rampant now.
All of us who play golf at Sun City Texas
will directly or indirectly miss the excel-
lent leadership Betty Ann Preston has
provided, and we all owe her a hearty
thank you. However, her civic duties have
not ended, as the 9-Hole WGA has drafted
her to be president. Wise move, ladies! Get
ready for some innovation.
