A Day in
the Life:
Title
Facilities Maintenance Manager
About me
I was born in West Texas and have lived
in Texas most of my life. My dad was a
high school science teacher and Baptist
preacher who loved to hunt and fish, so
I’ve hunted and fished from the time I
could walk behind him. In high school
and college, I was involved inmany extra-
curricular activities, but my passion was
playing sports―any kind. I was fortunate
to attend Hardin Simmons University on
a track scholarship.
As an adult, I have lived in Abilene,
Dallas, Midland, Houston, Surfside
Beach, Sweeny, Los Angeles, Austin and
Georgetown. I am married, have three
children, two stepchildren, 14 grand-
children, and two great grandchildren
(with one on the way!).
I was instilled with a strong work ethic
when I was young. I started shining shoes
at the local barber shop, then, at 11 years
old, I started driving a tractor and helping
my uncle on his farm. I continued helping
him from time to time until I moved away
as a young adult. As a teenager, I broke
and trained horses and did other jobs on
a ranch. During college, I got married

and started my family. My jobs spanned
a wide field, including working as:
• a manufacturing company quality as-
surance inspector, trainer, production
coordinator
• an industrial engineering standards
analyst
• a chemical plant engineering techni-
cian and water plant manager
• a structural pest control inspector
• a refinery operator (saved Phillips Pe-
troleum over $1million per year in four
suggestion awards)
• a real estate appraiser, and a licensed
realtor for 15 years
How long have you been here?
I began employment with the CA almost
14 years ago, starting as Maintenance
Technician in 2000, advancing to Facili-
ties Maintenance Supervisor and was
later promoted to Facilities Maintenance
Manager.
What does your job entail?
My areas of responsibility include man-
aging control systems and work orders,
training and supervising employees, and
“getting the job done.” My jobs include:
• managing one supervisor and four
maintenance techs
• managing the operation, maintenance
and functionality of 26 CA buildings,
lighted parking lots, and other facilities
(on call 24/7)
• coordinating and prioritizing work
orders
• overseeing maintenance of two Fitness
Centers, five pools and three spas
• monitoring the HVAC energy manage-
ment system
• managing the fire sprinklers, alarm
panels and security systems
• assisting the Fire Marshal with peri-
odic safety inspections and corrections
• soliciting contactor bids and making
appropriation requests for repairs,
additions, reserve replacements and
special projects, as well as coordinating
contractor services and acting as a liai-
son between contractors and directors
• as CA liaison to the Wildlife Manage-
ment Committee, attending and giving
presentations at safety meetings and
Wildlife Committee town halls
• I also have a permit in deer trapping
by Texas Parks & Wildlife, and assist
our Wildlife Consultant in wild hog
and vulture control
Favorite part of your job?
The best thing about my job is having
something new to do each day and the peo-
ple I work with. I also enjoy the satisfac-
tion and feeling of accomplishment when
a project is finished in a timely manner,
as well as helping to resolve issues and
working with residents and coworkers.
What’s next for you?
My future plans include rest―knowing
that I don’t need to answer the phone!
I also plan to spend more time with my
family, travel, do some fishing, watch a
sunrise or sunset, and “smell the roses.”
