DECEMBER 2013

December 16 will mark the last Golf Com-
mittee meeting chaired by Betty Ann
Preston. She will have served on the com-
mittee for two terms of two years each―
three years of which she served as the
Chair. Those three years brought some
remarkable changes and improvements
in how the Golf Committee functions.
While there have been many others
who served well on the committee and
numerous good Chairs, none proved to
be quite the visionary and organizer as
Betty Ann.
Remarkable Leadership
Betty Ann is the one who put forth the
idea of forming subcommittees for vari-
ous functions that would include mem-
bers of the Golf Committee, as well as one
or more residents not on the committee
to work on specific issues to bring before
the entire Golf Committee. For example,
the Golf Operations Subcommittee took
on the onerous task of examining and
tweaking the Rules of Golf for Sun City
Texas. After much deliberation and re-
search, the new rules were issued and
among them was a major change in the
Access Flag policy for golfers with dis-
abilities. Much discussion and investiga-
tion was involved to be certain the rules
were compliant with the ADA (Ameri-
cans with Disabilities Act); it was de-
termined that all of the old Access Flags
would be replaced by new ones of differ-
ent colors and that a physician had to
confirm that a medical condition existed
for the individual to obtain a new access
flag. The result was a reduction of almost
half of the number of Access Flags on our
courses, and that led to a lifting of the
restriction of no Access Flags on number
eight at White Wing and allowing Access
Flags on par threes.
As discussed in last month’s
Sun Rays
,
the Playability and Safety Subcommit-
tee was also formed under Betty Ann’s

The MGA has completed another very successful year and all of our events were well
attended and most of our tournaments had record attendance. We have improved
our pace of play and, with continued diligence, we will keep improving next year.
All of the Board of Directors and our other volunteers have done an excellent job on
all of our tournaments and MGA events during 2013.
We look forward to a promising new year with our 2014 Officers and Directors:
OFFICERS:
President – Mike Pender
Vice President – Jeff Morgan
Secretary – Steve Ritzwoller
Treasurer – Bob Hoernis
I would like to express my thanks to everyone who volunteered and worked for the
MGA this year. I would also like to say that the past four years on the MGA board
have been very rewarding and enjoyable. Anyone who has never been active with our
organization should give consideration to doing so in the future. Without volunteers,
we would not be as successful as we are today.
We have had a good year of golf
and socials. There are many ladies
to thank for all the work they have
done to organize and keep things
running smoothly during the year.
So, on behalf of the membership, I
will extend a heartfelt “Thank You”
to each of the board members, com-
mittee members and volunteers who
have contributed to an enjoyable and
successful 2013 season.
Also, we would like to extend a “Spe-
cial Thanks” to the WGA 9-Hole
Group for hosting the annual Fun
Fest on September 30. TheMixedUp
scramble combining the two WGA
groups was enjoyed by all and the de-
licious buffet they provided of salads
and desserts was fabulous.
The Club Championship was held
during October. Congratulations to
all the winners. Here are the results:
