“Summer school” tips for drivers

“I’m retired,” you say. “School is over.” Exactly. It’s June, school
is over and a lot of happy Junior Campers will visit Sun City
with or without their families.
For newcomers, Junior Camp is a two-week span when we show
off some of our sport and leisure lifestyle to a lucky bunch of 7
to 11-year-olds. It illustrates what Sun City Texas is all about,
shows them the best time ever and plants the dream in the
hearts of their younger sisters and brothers! (How do you think
Pulte finds future homeowners?)
Even if you don’t have grandkids of your own, you’ll start see-
ing children who don’t always understand we might not notice
them if they rush out in front of us. Our slower pace could mean
unexpected mishaps...so, especially when school is out, be extra
alert for short people. And drive Texas friendly for the rest of us.
OK, back to school for 10 quick refreshers:
 1. Be cautious in parking lots – little ones could run out be-

     tween cars and carts.
 2. STOP completely at red lights and stop signs. Check care-

     fully before you go.
 3. Use your directionals, and turn them off after you com-

     plete a turn.
 4. Don’t be distracted by conversations or cell phones.
 5. Check your medications, as some may make you drowsy.
 6. Have regular eye, ear and medical checkups.
 7. Don’t speed.
 8. Don’t tailgate. Keep extra space between your car(t) and

     the one ahead.
 9. Buckle up no matter how far you’re going - and make pas-

     sengers do the same!
 10. If kids are in the golf cart, YOU had better be driving!
One last teaching moment: Get out a piggy bank and tell the
kids it’s never too early to save for retirement. Then they can
be like you and play all day in Fun City.
Have a great summer, enjoy yourself and your families and
stay safe.
