active Williamson County Master Gar-
dener, and you can catch a photo of
her wearing her red hat each month in
the Sun Rays where her column, titled
“Water Wise Gardening Tips,” infuses
us with good gardening practices and
gives us tools to battle caliche and the
wily central Texas climate.

Not one to believe in a static land-
scape, (as Winola says, “What’s the
fun in that?”), much of the VanArts-
dalen garden is in constant revision.
Right off the front porch keeping the
columbine company sits a petite white
rose that is more than 40 years old, yet
still manages to fend off frost and deer.
