News from the SC Stacks
By Nancy Davis
The Library has several special collec-
tions of books. A popular collection is the
Large Print
books, which is located di-
rectly in front of the doors as you walk
into the main Library room. In the past
five years, the Large Print collection has
outgrown the one short shelf, first desig-
nated for it, to six crowded shelves. Some
of our most popular authors are repre-
sented there, such as James Patterson,
Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown and Larry
McMurtry. Also, there are large-print
Reader’s Digest Condensed books, some
biographies, and even a large-print Bible.
Another special section is the
Texana
collection. In it we have mostly non-
fiction; however, we also have some fic-
tion about Texas. Kinky Friedman is a
popular author of Texas humor and sat-
ire; also, there are several biographies
of Texans, well-known and not so well-
known. Two popular books by the Tex-
as author Janice Woods Windle,
True
Women
and
Hill Country
, are located in
this section. Texas history and geogra-
phy are well represented in both fiction
and non-fiction.
The
Story Collection
contains a vari-
ety of books, which usually include sto-
ries by several authors and are good for
a short period of reading
—
perhaps on
a plane trip. Some books in this group
are collections of sports, mysteries, or
science fiction stories.
Rather recently, we featured our
Three-In-One
collection. These books
have three complete novels, sometimes
as a series, by one author: Sue Grafton’s
mysteries,
ABC
and
DEF
, is an ex-
ample. Because many of the individual
books may have become more difficult
to find as they get older, this is a good
way to get started on a series you’ve
wanted to read.
Author of the Week
is not really a col-
lection but changes everyweek to feature
a popular author we think you might be
interested in reading.
The
Local Authors
collection is grow-
ing rapidly. About once a month, I dis-
cover another author living somewhere
in Williamson County, many times right
here in Sun City Texas, and I add their
book or books to our collection. Please
sendme a note if you know of an author I
may not have discovered. The book may
already be on our regular shelves.
Westerns
are a popular genre of books.
Harlequin
and
Silhouette
, the popu-
lar romance novels, are located nearby.
We have many of the favorite authors in
both groups.
The last special group I want to mention
is one we call
Prolifics
. These books
are by popular authors whose output
of books overwhelms our regular pa-
perback shelves. To solve this dilemma
somewhat, we have separate sections of
shelves for these books.
Frequently, there are periods when even
these shelves are packed with books.
The prolific authors featured at this
time: Sandra Brown, Tom Clancy, Mary
Higgins Clark, Patricia Cornwell, Clive
Cussler, Heather Graham, W.E.B. Grif-

Johansen, Jonathan Kellerman, Ste-
phen King, Dean Koontz, Robert Lud-
lum, Debbie Macomber, Fern Michaels,
James Patterson, Luanne Rice, Nora
Roberts, John Sandford, and Danielle
Steele. These may change as popularity
of authors grows or lessens, so if you can-
not find your favorite author in the usual
location, check the sign displayed on the
low center shelves.
All of these special groups of books are
located in the main Library room, either
in or on top of the low shelves in the cen-
ter of the room.
Did you know…?
Approximately 1,000 books, videos and
audio books are donated each month to
our Library. We keep about half of these
items. To make space on the shelves for
these approximately 500 new items, we
must cull roughly the same amount,
which are given to various charities.
