The Poker Club held a Texas Hold’em
no limit tournament on June 14 with
40 members participating in the
event. Congratulations to Ron Evans
for winning the tournament with Ron

fourth and Bill Alexander placing fifth.

Wanda Mize’s elephant is a magnificent
Texas live oak that spreads its many
twisting limbs in excess of 30 feet
across their property. According to
the arborist, this tree was already well
established on this spot when Texas
declared its independence from Mexico
in 1836. So while these days its location
and elder status require the occasional
trim and feeding, this survivor made it
on its own for over a century and a half.
Its strength and cover may have giv-
en refuge to many animals, ranchers,
cowboys and maybe even soldiers in
the past. But these days its embracing
limbs provide refuge to squirrels and
cool, dappling to deep shade for mul-
tiple plantings across the front of the
property. In a spot where a bit of sun
peeps in, a climbing lantana scales a lat-
tice placed near the porch where pretty
turquoise chairs give bright pops of col-
or. Near the driveway where sunshine
rules, Wanda grows an annual explosion
of bluebonnets. She then harvests the
plants, dries the seeds and replants in
