he 2013 Rally for the Cure is
back for its seventh year in Sun
City Texas! On Friday, October
25, all three Sun City golf courses will
host players and volunteers, donned in
a plethora of pink, as they come together
to raise money for Komen Austin and
hope for a future with a cure.
“It’s been like a rock gathering moss
every year,” said the event’s organizer,
Barbara Berry. “The spirit is overwhelm-
ing; it’s just so much fun.”
Since 2007, The Sun City Rally for the
Cure has raised more than $79,000 for
Komen Austin, including the $18,400
raised in 2012 alone. Most years sell
out, bringing folks from Sun City Texas
and the Central Texas area; however,
Barbara is adamant that the goal is not
so much to raise money, but to raise hope
for survivors, their families and friends,
and those fighting breast cancer.
“The goal has never been to raise as
much money as possible; the goal has
been to raise as many spirits as possi-
ble,” Barbara said. “We have a lot of sur-
vivors, and families of non-survivors―
whatever we give them, no matter how
much it is, is a drop in the bucket. But
the love is there. That’s more important
than money, I think.”
This transformative event not only
boosts the spirits of the participants,
but also brightens up the courses. Last
year, Director of Golf Course Mainte-
nance Gary Wilson and his crew dyed
the ponds pink, and added pink flags
and cups to golf course. “It’s always a
surprise. Who knows what he’ll do this
year,” Barbara said.
The Rally for the Cure tournament will
begin with a 9 a.m. shotgun start at all
three golf courses on Friday, October
25. Registration is $35 per person. Sign
up at Legacy Hills Pro Shop. A lunch in
the Social Center Ballroom, provided by
the Cotton Patch Café, will follow the
tournament.
