that created a need for sod to repair
them. The only place where that could
be harvested was on the practice chip-
ping green at Cowan Creek, which left
that green in a poor state until it grew
back. The alternative would have been to
purchase the sod froman outside source,
which would increase our costs.
With this nursery green, we will be
growing both the MiniVerde grass
used on the greens at Legacy Hills and
Cowan Creek, and Tiffeagle, which is
the makeup of WhiteWing greens. This
nursery will give us a source for sod for
all of our greens, preserve our practice
facilities, and possibly even provide a
revenue source by selling our sod to
other courses who do not have a nursery
farm and need sod for repairs. In other
words, it is a great long-term investment
and improvement for our golf courses.
Now, if we just had a sod farm for our
fairway grasses…

When it comes to golf, we always
want those perfect weather days―but
I would predict that almost everyone
would rather give up a few days on the
course to have a spell of good steady
rain to help relieve these scary drought
conditions.
Although there were no major tourna-
ments during the hot summer months,
our group was still busy! The nominat-
ing committee began its work solicit-
ing candidates for various positions on
the 2014 Executive Board. Two major
decisions were decided by the member-
ship based on written ballots: one was
whether or not to continue with Tuesday
play days and have the first tee time
of the day all year long, or change to
Wednesdays and continue playing in
the mornings during the spring/sum-
mer and afternoons in the fall/winter.
A change was requested due to the in-
creasing number of golfers and higher
demand for afternoon tee times. The
final decision was to continue playing
on Tuesdays.
A second issue requiring a vote dealt
with the “18 inch rule.” This rule means
if the ball lands within 18 inches of the
cup, it does not have to be putted all the
way into the hole, but a stroke has to be
added to the score. After a great deal of
pro and con discussion, the membership
voted to play until the clunk of the ball
could be heard!
The Social Committee was also hard
at work putting final touches on the
September Club Championship Dinner.

WGA 18-HOLE HISTORIAN
Susan Schroeder, a long-time
member of the WGA 18-Hole
Group, played in the Texas
Women’s Amateur Golf Associa-
tion Tournament held at Wolf-
dancer Golf Club in May 2013.
She came home with this trophy
for being the Super Senior Med-
alist. This same accomplishment
was achieved by another WGA
18-Hole member, Sheila Rice, in
2003 at this tournament.
