Alaska (molded penguins on iceberg), Hawaii (beach towel),
and Canada (a wonderfully soft penguin blanket).
I have penguin collections of perfume bottles, porcelain, wood,
bronze, brass, acrylic, glass, crystal, and soft furry ones, along
with penguin pictures, paintings, videos, greeting cards and
wrapping paper.
My husband, Terry, finally decided that I was getting too many
penguins, so he told the family that if they want to continue
to buy me penguins, then the penguin had to be useful! Thus,
I now have penguin blankets, sheets, silverware, ice cream
scoops, a coffee thermos, a spatula, trays, a camera, a phone,
a bottle opener, socks, house shoes, pajamas, sweatshirts,
lamps, jewelry, and a Judith Lieber purse!
Most recently, my husband remodeled our powder bath and
surprised me with an original stained glass window featuring
two penguins, made by one of the instructors of the Stained
Glass Club here in Sun City Texas.
At Home in Sun City
Upon moving to Sun City Texas three years ago, I was com-
pletely surprised when we came home one afternoon of that
first week and there on my front porch sat two darling penguin
ornaments! I hardly knew any of my neighbors and I had not
shown anyone my collection and, since there was no name or
note with the ornaments, I was really puzzled. I thought it
must have been a sign that we were meant to move here! It
was about four months later that I finally found the neighbor
who gave them to me―she had seen the sticker on my car that
read, “I love penguins!”
That first Christmas in Sun City, I gave a penguin party for
my grandchildren and I made myself a penguin outfit. As
they arrived, I walked out in my penguin outfit, quite fitting
for Grandma Penguin. They all came dressed in black and
white and we had a penguin parade.
I have already decided that when I pass away, I do not want my
penguin collection to be split up, so my daughter, Cari, from
California, has said she will keep the whole collection intact!
I still have on my bucket list to go see the penguins in their
natural habitat and walk among them. In the meantime, I
enjoy when all the penguins get to come out every Christmas
and I get to show them off. Grandma Penguin is in all her
glory with Christmas in black and white!
