 In 1879, Professor James Murray (Mel Gibson) is tasked with a new project: the creation of The New English Dictionary on Historical Principles, known today as the Oxford English Dictionary. Dr. Murray receives over 10,000 entries from one man, Dr. William Minor (Sean Penn) who is a patient at Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum. The men not only become unlikely friends, but also colleagues during their arduous undertaking and eventual completion of this publishing marvel still in use today. A biographical drama based on Simon Winchester's 1998 nonfiction book "The Surgeon of Crowthorne". |
