Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site is a wonderful place.  Spread over two levels, the Star of the Republic Museum is terrific.  It's loaded with thousands of items from Texas history, household items, statues, flags, documents, tools, weapons, letters, models, and much more.  Barrington Farm is a working farm of the 1850s with staffers in period costumes, and real livestock.  There is also a very nice gift shop with all kinds of books, trinkets, and various gift items with a Texan flavor.

Driving directions from Austin:  Take Highway 290 east to Brenham. In Brenham, take Business Route 290 to Highway 105 East. Go 14 miles and turn right on FM 912 to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site.
