Walk the same ground as World War II soldiers at Camp Hearne, a prisoner-of-war camp for an estimated 500,000 mostly German prisoners. Today's historic site outlines the camp's original footprint plus remnants of various prisoner built amenities. An exhibit depicting the camp’s daily life is housed in a reconstructed US Army barrack. The Museum of the American G.I. is home to one of the finest collections of restored, running WWII and later era military vehicles including a WWII Sherman tank, M18 Hellcat, River Patrol Boat, and more. Also displayed is an extensive collection of historic WWI and WWII propaganda posters as well as uniforms from WWI to Vietnam worn by American servicemen and women. The museum is honored to be the home of the Texas Vietnam Heroes Exhibit featuring 3,417 personalized dog tags honoring Texans who were killed or MIA in the Vietnam War. Special Exhibit: Over There: America in WWI is a centennial commemoration of America’s role in the Great War. Explore American life before the war; US soldier recruitment and equipping; war effort funding; home front frugality; and life for the men and women who served. The exhibit features 40+ original posters, uniforms, restored trucks, and the only operational FT-17 Renault tank in North America. Lunch on your own stop will be in College Station.
