Once you cross the threshold of these four early country churches, the unexpected and divinely inspired painted interiors burst with color. From the outside, these churches look like many of the 19th century places of worship. The interiors are embellished with lush foliage and thousands of stars outlined in gold leaf against a backdrop of sky blue. Others feature exquisite angels against soft pink hues. Each section of the churches contain statues, woodcarvings and wall hangings expertly painted and displayed. Be sure to look up at the ceiling too. Bring your camera because this is a photographer’s dream trip. A step-on guide will narrate the tour sharing the churches’ unique history. After touring two of the churches, enjoy lunch at Oakridge Smokehouse in Schulenburg specializing in old-fashioned country cooking. Buffet includes several entrees, salad, veggies, dessert and iced tea or coffee. Following lunch we travel to the final two churches and more wonderful sites.
