The Sun City Texas Firewise program is winding up it’s 10th year in Sun City with a Town Hall on October 9. Sun City is among more than 1,500 recognized Firewise Communities in the United States.
In 2009, the Firewise Group began with representatives from the Property & Grounds Committee, Wildlife Management Committee, CA Staff, some residents, the Georgetown Fire Department Chief (GFD) and the Texas Forest Service (TFS).
Our major focus is to educate Sun City residents about how to adapt to living in the Wildland/Urban Interface. We live with the potential that wildfires and house fires can produce embers that can ignite new fires. Actions taken before a fire strikes can reduce the potential for losses. We encourage residents to work together to reduce that danger.
Our annual Town Hall will be on National Fire Prevention Day. The program will look at how the Sun City Firewise Group came into being and how Texas A&M Forest Service works with Firewise communities. Georgetown Fire Department will bring us up to date on their programs and activities. The Sun City Firewise Group will close with a look to the future and how we will adapt to changes in Firewise requirements and continuing changes in the knowledge of wildfire hazards.
Before and after the Town Hall the following will be available to discuss and answer questions: Firewise Group; Emergency Management Committee; COPs; Wildlife Management Committee; Property & Grounds Committee; Georgetown Fire Department; Texas A&M Forest Service; and USAA Insurance.
