We are going to Gault!
You may have seen articles about the Gault Site in the Austin American Statesman as well as in
our own Sun Rays. Right here in Central
Texas, this nationally and internationally acclaimed archaeological site is
known for its huge number of artifacts from the Clovis culture, dating from
about 11,000 years ago. Over 2.6 million artifacts from Gault shed new light on
the society of these oldest known people in the Americas.
The site had a long history of archaeological abuse,
including paid digging and looting, and much of the upper strata was
irreparably damaged. Thankfully, that is
in the past, and the remaining area is now protected. We will get to walk through the excavation
site and hear about its history and present-day expectations from Dr. Clark
Wernecke, Executive Director of the Gault School of Archaeological
Research. Dr. Wernecke has the gift of
making his narrative interesting and entertaining as well as informative.
After our visit to Gault, we will go to Schoepf’s in
Belton for BBQ lunch.
Note:
There will be much walking on this trip with no places to sit down and rest.
Ticket cost includes transportation, tour, and lunch.
