Buying a Ukulele

Feb 17 - Big shipment of New Ukuleles has arrived at Kenz Guitars in Downtown Georgetown!

How to choose a Ukulele  - does it feel good in your hands?   Does is sound good?

  • imgUkuleles come in 4 sizes. The smaller 3 are all tuned to GCEA. This is how our music will be presented. See tuning below.  (Baritones have different tuning. If you already have a Baritone, just know that you'll need to draw your own chord diagrams).

  • A good first "happy medium" uke would be one of the 2 medium sizes - Concert or Tenor. Sopranos are the smallest, they are great classic ukuleles too (but sometimes hard If you have arthritis in your hands). Baritone, the biggest, has different chord charts so our music won't match for you.

  • Before you buy, hold / feel the sizes at a Kenz' Guitar shop downtown, 705 S Main St. They just ordered a whole bunch for us that will be there in early February! Call ahead to see if their new inventory is in before you head downtown.

  • Favorite beginner brand Ukes = Alvarez, Cordoba, Kala/Makala & Luna.

  • Meanwhile, you can try a friend's uke at our jams. You are always welcome to come chat/play with the Georgetown Ukulele Group who have all sizes of ukuleles you can hold and play (2nd & 4th Wednesdays 6-8pm at Grace Chapel 817 S. Main Street Downtown Georgetown...music is projected on the big screen).

  • Or you can buy Online once you know what you like. Watch that you can return to Amazon if it just doesn't feel right or sound right (Donner Ukes often don't stay in tune). This Enya Concert for $49 rates very well with the Uke Facebook groups - we can't personally guarantee, but it feels like a good option and you could return if you don't like it.
